How To| Fix Preflight Errors

When uploading your ad via one of our delivery methods, if your ad is not to the correct spec you may receive one the following alerts:

Warnings | Should be fixed, but you can still send the file at your own risk.

Common Warnings:

  • Incorrect PDF/X Output Intent
    Your ad has not got the correct ICC profile embedded, see HERE for guidance on colour profiles.

  • TrueType font used
    For best reproduction; outline all fonts before exporting your PDF.

  • Text size warnings
    This highlights any small text, the advised minimum is 6pt.

Errors | Must be fixed before sending, you will be unable to proceed until there are no more errors.

Common Errors:

  • PDF/X Version Key, OutputIntent or Document Title missing
    Re-export your PDF as a PDF/X-1a:2001, v1.4 with an embedded output intent.

  • Transparency used (various)
    Re-export your PDF as a PDF/X-1a:2001, v1.4 with an embedded output intent.

  • Registration colour
    Each product has a max ink density - Newsprint 240% / Magazine 360%.
    This % is the sum of how much colour is in each channel (C/M/Y/K).
    Registration colour has 100% in all 4 channels making it unprintable.
    You should replace any registration colour with a ‘Rich Black’ which is C60,M40,Y40,K100, also - remove any crop marks as they are not allowed and are by default registration black.

  • Total Area Coverage of more than 240% / 360%
    Each product has a max ink density - Newsprint 240% / Magazine 360%.
    This % is the sum of how much colour is in each channel (C/M/Y/K).
    Areas of the ad with a higher ink coverage than the maximum will lose detail due to the amount of ink saturating the paper.
    You should reduce the darkness and colour density of the affected areas.
    Affected areas can be seen under the ‘visualiser’ on your upload method.
    Ensuring you prepare the ad with the correct icc profile will keep your ink coverage in check.

We stongly advise taking advantage of this service if the quality of the colour and reproduction is of high importance to you or your client, or, if you are close to the copy deadline and risk not getting your ad to us in time.

We will NOT accept ads with errors via email, and will not be held responsible should you ignore any warnings which then lead to poor reproduction - this is especially true in regards to incorrect colour profiles for magazine adverts.
